Can Microsoft and Linux co-exist? Microsoft and Apple? There are more than a single way of looking at the problem and while more and more building blocks will be rolled up into *aaS offerings, it still wont remove custom infrastructure where requirements don’t fit the *aaS offerings. This wont change over night either as technology will always move faster than the providers can - if I deploy a patch to fix a bug and the providers are following a distro version, then the bug will only be fixed when the patch is pushed upstream to the project then downstream to the distro… best case (for security patches) is a few hours… worst case (for big feature changes) it can take months, years or even never…
